It is not often that a secondary stock offering sends a company shares higher, but we are seeing that very phenomenon Friday morning. Chinese solar PV maker JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS) and stock image company Shutterstock Inc. (NASDAQ: SSTK) both priced secondary offerings this morning and shares in both companies have risen sharply.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

But the real news is the near vertical trajectory in share prices for the two stocks. This could be another manifestation of the market hunger for some momentum plays, as we noted earlier this morning the bump to share prices for both JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS) and Shutterstock Inc. (NASDAQ: SSTK), both of which held secondary share sales this morning.

Advisors' Opinion:

Weight Watchers International (WTW) has surged today after the company beat earnings forecasts and raised its guidance of the year.

    Getty Images

Shares of Weight Watchers have gained 23% to $24.36 at 11:27 a.m., while NutriSystem (NTRI) has gained 2.4% to $15.36 and Medifast (MED) has dropped 1.6% to $31.15.

Weight Watchers reported a profit of 31 cents a share, easily besting the Street Consensus for 9 cents.

Credit Suisse analysts Glen Santangelo and Jeffrey Bailin explain why Weight Watcher’s shares have put on a few pounds:

The predominant message on [last] evening conference call is that recruitment trends have shown some incremental stabilization and are no longer getting worse. This trend change combined with continued vigilance on the cost side has given management the confidence to raise its full year outlook $0.125 at the midpoint, to a new range of $1.45-$1.70. We note this compares favorably to the current FactSet consensus of $1.40. Cash flow of $83M in the quarter was solid, which should help alleviate some concerns on the upcoming ~$300M debt payment due in 2016. With expectations very low heading into the quarter (as exhibited by high short interest), we expect these results will give the shares a boost in tomorrow trading. While the
company is far from out of the woods in the intensifying competitive landscape, we are somewhat encouraged that the initial steps management is taking to redefine the offering are gaining some traction.

Shares of Weight Watchers were down 40% this year at yesterday’s close, while NutriSystem had fallen 7.7% and Medifast had gained 21%.

Better or worse, that's why I'm purchasing shares of Weight Watchers (NYSE: WTW  ) equal to 3% of my Real Money Portfolio's capital. Our collective waistlines are expanding, at an ever-increasing rate. And in an industry dominated by snake-oil remedies, quick fixes and faddish diets, and short-termist solutions, Weight Watchers' clinically proven, decades-old approach to weight loss management and behavior modification stands apart.

Timothy Clary, AFP/Getty ImagesU.S. Attorney Preet Bharara speaks at a news conference last July about a federal indictment against SAC Capital, the hedge fund run billionaire Steven Cohen. NEW YORK -- Billionaire investor Steven A. Cohen's days as a hedge fund manager may be finished with an agreement by his SAC Capital Advisors to plead guilty to criminal charges of insider trading and pay a record $1.8 billion in fines and forfeitures. But Cohen, one of Wall Street's best known traders, hasn't been personally charged with any crime and will likely continue managing some $9 billion of his own money through a family office once his hedge fund's plea deal is cleared by the courts. Cohen's fund will shut down its investment advisory business, according to a settlement with prosecutors announced Monday. SAC Capital is up 1.3 percent in October and up 15.95 percent so far this year, a source familiar with its performance said. If approved by federal judges, the agreement would also resolve civil forfeiture action against SAC and its affiliates. The deal also requires SAC to install an independent compliance monitor if it continues to trade. Jonathan Gasthalter, a spokesman for SAC Capital, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The settlement is only the beginning of a long process for Cohen of freeing himself from the constraints of a federal investigation that has gone on for at least seven years and has tarnished the reputation of one of Wall Street's most revered stock traders. "The government is getting an enormous amount of money and shutting down his advisory business. They've basically achieved what they wanted, which is to cut off this guy's ability to manage other people's money," said C. Evan Stewart, a partner at Zuckerman Spaeder who is not connected with the case. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara outlined the plea deal in a letter to federal judges in the case that accused SAC Capital of presiding over a culture in which emp

The New York traded ADRs of China's Home Inns and Hotels Management (HMIN) have climbed 15.5% from September 24 to the close on October 11.

Part of the reason is a October 10 recommendation from Goldman Sachs that added the ADRs to its top pick list. Advisors' Opinion:

What is the advantage of being a huge company? There are some. For one, we know the business is or was growable. A lot of small companies stay small because their circle of competence is small. Paradise (PARF) is an over the counter stock. It has a market cap of $10 million. And it dominates the candied fruit market in the U.S. Why isn the company bigger?
