Investors in PepsiCo, (NYSE: PEP ) especially those fond of reinvesting dividends, should have few complaints about the consumer goods multinational so far in 2014. The company's stock performance is outpacing giant snack food peers like Mondelez International, as well as beverage arch-rival Coca-Cola, while also floating well above the broader market in a year-to-date, total-return comparison:
PEP Total Return Price data by YCharts.
Is PepsiCo's stock ready to return to the middling performance of its peers, or will it continue to climb in the near future? Below, we'll discuss three reasons which support the possibility of further appreciation.
1) Challenging Peltz's principles
For much of this year, PepsiCo has operated looking over its shoulder at hedge-fund operator Trian Partners and its CEO, Nelson Peltz. Through Trian Fund Management, L.P., Trian Partners owns a $1.2 billion stake in PepsiCo,and has advocated splitting up the snacks and beverages businesses, most notably in a detailed white paper issued earlier this year.

Action to take --> Ackman's activist campaigns appear to have run their course for a number of his top holdings, including Canadian Pacific, General Growth and Beam (NYSE: BEAM). For investors looking to invest in stocks that could still benefit from Ackman's activist expertise, I would consider Air Products and Procter & Gamble. Ackman appears to be sticking with what he knows; one of his biggest wins of late was at Canadian Pacific, an industrial stock, and so it's no surprise his newest campaign is at yet another industrial company, Air Products. Both P&G and Air Products should also be big benefactors of a rebounding economy. If you really want to invest like Ackman, be on the lookout for next year's planned IPO of Pershing Square Holdings, which will allow investors to invest in Ackman's hedge fund through a shell company.

One concern that Brown-Forman might not need to worry about at least for now is the prospect of further consolidation in the space. For a while, it appeared that Diageo might move forward to try to buy out Brown-Forman whiskey rival Beam (NYSE: BEAM ) . But Diageo CEO Ivan Menezes dismissed talk of a merger, saying it was unnecessary in light of Diageo's already-strong Johnnie Walker brand and other offerings. As for Constellation Brands, its recent move to pick up the Grupo Modelo U.S. beer business has likely left it needing some time before considering any further major corporate moves in the near future.

Pure-play spirits competitor Beam (NYSE: BEAM ) wants a piece of the action. Its 2012 acquisition of Irish whiskey producer Cooley Distillery adds to its already-successful brown liquor portfolio. Beam's popular Maker's Mark and Jim Beambrands posted 15% and 10% respective sales growth in 2012. Even better, the company's more premium products, Basil Hayden's and Knob Creek, enjoyed 35% and 24% respective sales growth during the same period.

At C&C Group's (NASDAQOTH: CCGGY ) annual meeting earlier this month, it was revealed that when it bought the Hornsby brand two years ago, it paid $25 million and got a 20% share of the market for its efforts. It paid more than 10 times that amount, or about $300 million, for Vermont Hard Cider and its top Woodchuck brand, and got another 42% share of the market. So C&C had almost two-thirds of the cider market all to itself.

There is plenty of money to be made in sweeteners; in 2012 the global sweetener market was at $77.5 billionand is expected to reach $97.2 billion by 2017. While sugar controls roughly 85% of the sweetener market, many Americans are trying to cut down on their consumption of sugar by switching to natural zero calorie sugar substitutes, which is why companies that grow, produce, or utilize stevia (the fastest growing natural zero calorie sugar substitute on the market) are worth watching. For those who don know, stevia is a shrub that is native to South America and contains roughly thirty different steviol glycosides. Some of these compounds are called rebaudiosides, with rebaudioside A (Reb A) being the most abundant and the sweetest (and least bitter). In the past, stevia could only be found in products in Asia and on shelves in health food/exotic stores in the U.S. (but labeled as a dietary supplement and NOT a sweetener or food due to FDA bureaucracy). But in the past few years stevia has found its way into the mainstream market as companies like Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO), PepsiCo (NYSE:PEP), and Monster Beverage Corp (NASDAQ:MNS) have incorporated the sweet extract into its growing lines of zero to low calorie beverage products. Even Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) adds stevia to sweeten its canned Starbucks energy drink, Refreshers. As stevia continues to evolve and gain in popularity, the World Health Organization sees stevia could eventually replace 20-30% of all dietary sweeteners.

A smaller industry player to consider
Similar to Coca-Cola in terms of product offerings is Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (NYSE: DPS ) , which, like its big brother, relies exclusively on beverages. Even though Dr. Pepper Snapple is a much smaller competitor, with a $9 billion market capitalization, it offers a compelling investment case. That's because not only does Dr. Pepper Snapple offer more growth potential, due to its much smaller size, but it's also cheaper than its larger rivals on most valuation metrics.
