Top Value Stocks For 2014

The last six months have been good to coal miners like Alpha Natural Resources (ANR), Walter Energy (WLT), Consol Energy (CNX) and Peabody Energy (BTU), which all gained more than 10%. The last month, not so much, as many have experienced double-digit losses.

Andrew Hancock for the Wall Street Journal

Against that backdrop, Cowen’s Daniel Scott and Bryan Bergin have decided to cut their ratings on met coal producers Alpha Natural Resources, Walter Energy and Teck Resources (TCK) to Market Perform from Outperform. Scott and Bergin explain why:

While improving sentiment and an apparent macro risk-on trade helped to boost shares in December, we question what a reasonable multiple in the trough is, and see limited upside potential from current levels. We expect that investors may migrate to [Peabody Energy] based on favorable exposure to international met operations and an improving PRB market, but see it near fair value given our new estimates.

Alamy HOUSTON -- Halliburton says it lost $18 million in the first quarter, pulled down by $637 million in charges related to its role in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. But it made money if unusual items are excluded, beating Wall Street expectations. The oil services company's loss amounted to 2 cents a share. That compares with net income of $627 million, or 68 cents a share, a year earlier. Halliburton Co. (HAL), which is in talks to settle claims against it related to the oil spill, said that excluding the charges it posted adjusted earnings of 67 cents a share. That beat the 57 cents that analysts expected. The Houston company, which provides a variety of services for the petroleum industry, is benefiting from a boom in U.S. oil production, which is at the highest level in more than two decades. At the same time, Halliburton's natural gas business has slowed as drillers slowed production due to falling prices for the fuel. Revenue rose slightly to $6.97 billion from $6.87 billion. Analysts expected $6.88 billion. Halliburton shares jumped $1.44, or 3.9 percent, to $38.65 in premarket trading an hour before the market opening. Halliburton is the biggest provider of oil field services in North America, including hydraulic fracturing, a technology that has helped unlock large supplies of oil and natural gas from shale rock formations in the U.S. North American revenue fell 11 percent to $3.71 billion, while operating income tumbled 43 percent to $605 million. Dave Lesar, the company's chairman, president and CEO, said a drop in Halliburton's rig count and pricing pressures in North America were more than offset by the company's growing international business. International revenue increased 21 percent from a year ago. For the full year, Halliburton still expects total international revenue growth in the "low teens," he said. Rival Schlumberger Ltd. (SLB), which has a larger international business, said Friday that its revenue climbed in region

You have Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO  ) , Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) , Dollar General (NYSE: DG  ) . You mention, in particular, Family Dollar, which is the lowest market cap out of all of those, as doing the best, an exceptional company. Why?

Back in January, we wrote about why we thought Caterpillar (CAT) was a solid investment opportunity. Since then the stock is down 15% and famed short seller Jim Chanos has announced he's short the stock. Chanos thinks the company has too much exposure to the wrong products at the wrong place in the cycle.

Despite having recently been upgraded by Longbow Research from "neutral" to "buy," shares ofCaterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) are down 0.35% today. The main reason shares are falling today is the poor earnings report released by Cummins (NYSE: CMI  ) this morning. The company reported that sales dropped 19% in the company's engine and turbine unit. Cummins also blamed the poor results on weak oil, gas, and mining demand -- areas in which Caterpillar also operates.

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) gave up ground after the company reported slow North American growth and continued declines in Asia and Europe.

Home Depot (NYSE: HD) reported that it has removed all malware from its systems late Thursday. A dollar amount was not put on expected losses, but the company warned expenses could be high.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Another Dow stock that likely fell on the news from China was Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , which ended the day down 0.1%. Although today's announcement clearly didn't have a major affect on either caterpillar or Alcoa, it did add fuel to the bearish sentiment investors have had with each company this year. Caterpillar is down 7.24% year to date, while Alcoa has lost 8.06%. These may not seem like massive declines, but when we add in the fact that the Dow itself is up 12.94% in 2013, the idea that Alcoa and Caterpillar have been beaten by nearly 20% over just the past six months is rather shocking.
